Colonic fermentation of Biolex MB40 had anti-inflammatory properties as demonstrated by the significant increase in the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in the Caco-2/THP1 co-culture model with all three donors; fermentation of Leiber Beta-S resulted in increased IL-10 production with all donors, which only reached significance for donor B. This is in agreement with a study evaluating β-1,3–1,6-D-glucan supplementation in dogs with IBD that reported an increase in serum IL-10 concentrations [20]. Here, IL10 is linked to inflammatory bowel disease.
