In neurodegenerative disorders there is also a widespread dysfunction of autophagic processes in the brain, in particular in neurons, but also in glial cells, resulting in impaired clearance of misfolded proteins and thus their accumulation, e.g. amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) in AD, α-Synuclein (α-Syn) in PD, huntingtin in HD resulting in neuroinflammation (Guo et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene APP and Alzheimer disease.
