The ability of sST2 to be used as a potential novel biomarker in heart failure was demonstrated in a study by Weinberg et al. in 2004 where they found that baseline sST2 and BNP were correlated, and the change in sST2 from baseline was a predictor of mortality in patients with NYHA functional class III-IV (55). This evidence concerns the gene NPPB and heart failure.
