In our study, we observed a significant alteration in iron metabolism, with a decrease in serum iron levels among the groups with obesity/overweight, MetS+, and alterations in the ultrasonographic score that determines the severity of hepatic steatosis, which indirectly proves that hepcidin overproduction, induced by the low-grade chronic inflammation present in these conditions, limits iron absorption. The gene discussed is HAMP; the disease is fatty liver disease.
