CGAS and age-related macular degeneration: Senescence is involved in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) through several pathways: (1) response to oxidative stress; (2) damage to macular tissue; (3) degeneration of the choriocapillaris mediated by a membrane attack complex; (4) the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase stimulatory pathway of interferon genes (cGAS-STING); (5) the DNA damage response; and (6) the accumulation of amyloid beta peptides [24].
