Lipid metabolism genes such as APOE, ABCA1, LIPC, and CETP play fundamental roles in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by influencing lipid transport, cholesterol efflux, and lipoprotein remodeling within the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and Bruch’s membrane. This evidence concerns the gene ABCA1 and age-related macular degeneration.
