The reasons underlying the choice of the SH‐SY5Y cell line, widely used as a model for Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders, are due to the fact that these cells exhibit numerous biochemical and functional characteristics of neurons, such as the expression of neurofilament proteins, dopamine transporter and receptors, and enzymes involved in the biosynthesis and clearance of dopamine [37, 38, 39]. This evidence concerns the gene SLC6A3 and nervous system disorder.
