The overexpression of this protein in tumors is associated with reduced cell death and is found to indicate a bad prognosis in several cancers, such as glioblastoma (GBM), where overexpression of BIRC5 has been associated with a poor prognosis, as the gene itself has been implicated in promoting the formation of CSCs and maintaining stemness [29], thus making survivin a great prognostic factor and therapeutic target. This evidence concerns the gene BIRC5 and glioblastoma.
