We compared the cytokines expression of patients with SSc to healthy subjects and found that TNFRII and MMP-8 levels (Figure 1a,b) were higher in SSc patients than in healthy controls (TNFRII 9761 ± 3076 pg/mL vs. 5504 ± 1007 pg/mL and MMP-8 16,839 ± 12,902 pg/mL vs. 6247 ± 6950 pg/mL, respectively), whereas IL-1RII concentration (Figure 1c) was higher in healthy subjects (8514 ± 2255 vs. 5784 ± 2220 pg/mL) (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). The gene discussed is MMP8; the disease is systemic sclerosis.
