It is also unclear whether long‐term epilepsy represents a risk for abnormal tau aggregation and cognitive impairment as a manifestation of more common age‐related tauopathies, such as Alzheimer disease (AD), primary age‐related tauopathy, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), or as a distinct process, akin to the idiosyncratic pTau accumulation in varied chronic inflammatory brain conditions.6 This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and epilepsy.
