Particularly, while at early AD stages (Braak stages 0‐II), TSPO‐expressing microglia may reflect a phagocytic phenotype, marked by CD68, implicating a potential protective role, at later stages (Braak V‐VI), TSPO‐expressing microglia are more associated with a reactive, scavenging phenotype, marked by MDR‐A+, associating it to neurodegeneration and worsening of cognitive decline. Here, TSPO is linked to Alzheimer disease.
