TNF and Schnyder corneal dystrophy: Among other findings, they were able to confirm that: (i) overnight TNF-α perfusion increased permeability in HUVECs with upregulation of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and E-selectin; (ii) 1 h perfusion of hemin (a hemolytic byproduct) at SCD relevant concentrations also increased permeability in HUVECs and HDMVECs; (iii) and perfusion of TNF-α followed by Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells resulted in heightened occlusion of microchannels, with some vessels within the microvascular system being nearly completely obstructed.
