It is possible that, already in gray zone alleles, some structural changes start occurring, reducing miR-323a-3p’s capacity to bind to the 3′UTR of FMR1 mRNA or causing mild cellular toxicity, as suggested in a 2020 study by Hall et al., which found gray zone alleles to be associated with parkinsonism and increased mortality [90].
