The BAX:Bcl2 ratio is important because these two proteins work together to control apoptosis, with a homodimer of BAX resulting in pore formation in the outer membranes of mitochondria [53,54], whilst the BAX-Bcl2 heterodimer prevents apoptosis by preventing BAX homodimer binding to the mitochondrial membrane and p53 [54,55], an anti-tumour protein important in preventing cell division [56].
