HDGFL2 and malaria: The need for surveillance has become more urgent following the confirmation of parasites carrying kelch13 mutations and deletions in the histidine-rich protein 2 and 3 (hrp2 and 3) coding genes in the Horn of Africa.9 These deletions enable parasites to evade detection by widely used HRP2-based rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs),10–11 preventing malaria diagnosis and treatment and facilitating the rapid spread of diagnostic and/or drug-resistant parasites.
