In peripheral inflammatory disorders, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, the expression of FABP4 in macrophages is increased, and pharmacological inhibition through FABP4 inhibitors, such as BMS309403, reduces negative outcomes in animal models of these peripheral diseases (Furuhashi et al. 2007; Guo et al. 2022; Lan et al. 2011). This evidence concerns the gene FABP4 and obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
