While IgA, particularly local mucosal IgA antibodies, are believed to play a more important role in protection against enteric infections, including Shigellosis and ETEC diarrhea, we have shown that rabbits i.m. immunized with MecVax or a cholera MEFA protein developed IgG (no detectable IgA) antibodies and were protected against ETEC or vibrio intestinal colonization (40, 41, 43). The gene discussed is CD79A; the disease is shigellosis.
