As shown in Figure 1, ferroptosis is triggered mainly by three metabolic disorders: excessive intracellular iron accumulation, increased lipid ROS [particularly hydroxyl radicals (OH·)], and decreased activity of antioxidant systems [especially glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4)] (Jiang et al., 2021; Yang and Stockwell, 2016). The gene discussed is GPX4; the disease is metabolic disease.
