PIEZO2 and peripheral nerve injury: Our current study reveals a mechanism: bursts of spontaneous firing in sympathetic fibers, abnormally sprouting within the DRG after peripheral nerve injury, may lead to bouts of vasomotion (i.e. vasoconstriction, vasodilation and/or displacement due to local blood pressure changes) that activate nearby Piezo2-expressing neurons, resulting in the observed clustered firing and pain.
