BCL2 and cancer: The recognition of the importance of BCL-2 family interactions and the critical BH3 domain-mediated neutralization of anti-apoptotic BCL-2 proteins in the induction of mitochondrial apoptosis has led to the development of so-called “BH3 mimetics”, small molecular compounds, which act as inhibitors of anti-apoptotic BCL-2 proteins and represent already an established therapy in cancer patients (e.g. Venetoclax, ABT-199) (reviewed in [13]).
