GJA1 and cardiovascular disorder: The use of Cx43 as a therapeutic target in cardiovascular diseases associated with reduced Cx43 levels should not only ensure the increase in Cx43 protein levels; rather, Cx43 function should also be controlled in terms of its trafficking to and assembly into gap junctions, gating of Cx43-formed channels, functional control of mitochondria, nuclei and exosomes, as well as Cx43 degradation.
