Generation of nanoparticles that encapsulate fluorinated ionic liquids in a nanoparticle shell. The shells were designed to be opened by acidic pH (H+), glutathione (GSH) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) which resulted in the release of the 19F cargo (fluoroborate, difluoroacetate, and trifluoromethanesulfonate) which is associated with turning on the 19F signal. Due to the fact that all 19F tracer have a distinct chemical shift, it was possible to image GSH- and MMP-2- activity as well as acidic pH in subcutaneously implanted tumours in mice by in vivo multiplex 19F MRI.
