While the contribution made by RIG-I- and cGAS-mediated osteoblast and osteoclast immune responses to osteomyelitis pathogenesis has yet to be determined, it is possible that the induced production of inflammatory/pro-osteoclastogenic cytokines, such as IL-6, exacerbates the inflammatory bone loss associated with S. aureus infection.
