Inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) using agents such as ranibizumab and aflibercept has revolutionised the treatment of diabetic retinopathy; however, their benefit is limited to those who have already lost some vision, they do not prevent diabetic retinopathy from advancing, they require repeated injections into the eye and, in many patients, their eyes respond insufficiently or not at all [2]. Here, VEGFA is linked to diabetic retinopathy.
