Considering the key role of OXT in human interactions (Rigney, De Vries, Petrulis, & Young, 2022), we cannot rule out that the baseline low OXT levels in BPD patients are an epiphenomenon and reflect the poor social functioning and social isolation rather than an illness mechanism, while changes after psychotherapies are a consequence of social functioning improvement rather than direct treatment neurobiological effects. This evidence concerns the gene OXT and Borderline personality disorder.
