CDH2 and cancer: When the activation of the EMT process is initiated, the expression of cellular E-cadherin substantially decreases, while the expression of protein markers representing the morphology of mesenchyme, such as N-cadherin and Vimentin, substantially increases, and with the changes in the levels of these proteins, the mobility of the cells and the degradability of the basement membrane consequently increase, ultimately facilitating the spread of the cancer cells to the surrounding stroma [5].
