At the level of the aortic root area in the heart, cholesterol-enriched diet-fed APOE∗3-Leiden.CETP mice featured typical advanced atherosclerosis plaques characterized by the presence of foam cells, necrosis, fibrosis, and cholesterol crystals [33], which was absent in the WT mice (Figure 3, Supplementary Figure 3; hematoxylin and eosin–stained images). The gene discussed is CETP; the disease is atherosclerosis.
