Whereas lean WAT predominantly exists in an anti‐inflammatory state, it is proposed that pathological WAT expansion results in loss of homeostatic balance, accompanied by increasing production of pro‐inflammatory adipokines, such as tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF‐α) and interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), characterizing obesity as a condition of chronic low‐grade inflammation.9 This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and obesity disorder.
