Four of the 29 genes initially identified met these criteria: ALDH2, which has been targeted for alcohol disorders and tested for some cancers (Table S2); CHRNB2, a target of nicotine; ITGAL (CD11a) was targeted for psoriasis, arthritis, and diabetes (Table S1); and ITGAM (CD11b), which is frequently, although unsuccessfully, targeted for cancers.29 The gene discussed is CHRNB2; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
