Ferroptosis was originally identified in cancer cells, when Dixon et al. reported that a unique iron-dependent form of non-apoptotic cell death was induced by the small molecule erastin in a number of cancer cells, including NRAS-mutant HT-1080 fibrosarcoma cells, HRAS-mutant BJeLR engineered tumor cells and KRAS-mutant Calu-1 non-small cell lung cancer cells [1]. The gene discussed is NRAS; the disease is cancer.
