GPX4 and Parkinson disease: It has been reported that intracellular iron-overload contributes to neuronal cell death via apoptosis and ferroptosis pathways (Zeng et al., 2021), while desferrioxamine (DFO), a well-known iron chelator, inhibits ferroptosis in Parkinson’s disease cell model improving expression levels of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and ferritin heavy chain.
