The vesicular glutamate transporter encoded by eat‐4, an ortholog of mammalian SLC17A7 and SLC17A8, has been implicated in glutamate dysregulation associated with drug dependence.[34] Research in mammals has shown that METH administration increases the expression of VGLUT1 in the cortex and VGLUT2 in the striatum,[35] suggesting a potential role for glutamate signaling in vulnerability to drug dependence. Here, SLC17A8 is linked to drug dependence.
