FHM typing by direct sequencing of the screening PCR-positive samples is not recommended, as this method amplifies preferentially bacteria with high loads in samples, reducing the chance of detecting coinfections (Aquino et al. 2014), particularly with CMt, which usually exhibits low-load bacteremia and predominantly infects cats already harboring other FHM species (Willi et al. 2006b).
