PTH and Hypocalcemia: Of the 159 patients who had undergone total thyroidectomy, eight (5%) had postoperative day 1 (POD1) parathyroid hormone (PTH) < 10 pg/ml, of whom three (2%) developed hypocalcaemia treated with calcium ± vitamin D, two with undetectable PTH at POD1 and one with PTH <5 pg/ml at POD1.
