Another type of sexsteroid hormone is progestins(Figure 30), whichare well known inthe regulation of pregnancy, the menstrual cycle, and cancer proliferation.Recently, they have been proposed as chemosensitizers acting throughMDR-related proteins, TGF-β, and Wnt/β-catenin pathwaysand facilitating apoptosis by disrupting mitochondrial function.76 Given its similarity to progesterone 37, it may directly couple to the progestogen receptor, triggeringresponses to this pathway in the regulation of cancer cell proliferation.
