In mice, levels of fibronectin and of the ECM protein tenascin C, another MMP7 substrate (Siri et al. 1995), increase in response to myocardial infarction (Konstandin et al. 2013), but counterintuitively, this effect is less pronounced in MMP7 knockout mice (Chiao et al. 2010).
