This in turn triggers the cytosolic DNA sensing machinery via cGAS-STING, that may result in production of pro-immunogenic cytokines (e.g., type I interferons) when stimulated briefly, but suppresses cytokine production and promotes STING-dependent pro-metastatic pathways when activated tonically, such as in the case of most CIN-driven cancers7,16,17. This evidence concerns the gene STING1 and cervical squamous intraepithelial neoplasia.
