Acute SARS-CoV-2 infection of WAT adipocytes and macrophages (49–52) suggests an additional mechanism through which obesity could influence COVID-19 severity; i.e., an increased number of cells susceptible to infection and subsequent pathologies such as dyslipidemia and increased inflammatory cytokine release and worsening insulin sensitivity. The gene discussed is INS; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
