Next, to create an experimental model of diabetic neuropathy, we maintained high blood glucose levels in STZ-induced T1D diabetic mice (> 20 mmol/L) for a minimum of twelve weeks51–53 (Supplementary Fig. 17a) and found that there was indeed a positive correlation between hyperglycemia and systemic levels of inflammatory biomarkers of nociception, such as neuropeptide substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)54,55 (Fig. 7a, b).
