Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a distinct acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtype characterized by balanced reciprocal translocation t (15; 17) involving the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) gene on chromosome 15 and the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) gene on chromosome 17 (De Braekeleer et al., 2014). The gene discussed is PML; the disease is acute promyelocytic leukemia.
