ALK and anaplastic large cell lymphoma: In ALK+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) cells and primary tumors, squalene accumulation induced by the inhibition of the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway enzyme squalene cyclooxygenase (SQLE) alters the cellular lipid distribution and protects membrane lipids from chemical modification or remodeling, avoiding ferroptosis triggered by the over-oxidation of membrane PUFAs and providing a growth advantage under oxidative stress conditions and in tumor xenografts [145].
