Initially identified as a neuronal cell adhesion molecule in the central nervous system, L1CAM expression has also been found in other cell types, where it is believed to promote rapid proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of tumor cells,11 partly through the activation of the extracellular signal‐regulated kinase pathway, inducing the expression of genes associated with motility and invasion. The gene discussed is L1CAM; the disease is neoplasm.
