CD44 and cancer: It is widely described that chemotherapeutic drugs usedin DDS achieve a more significant cytotoxic effect on cancer cells than when administeredfreely in a solution.40−42 Specifically, HA is aligand of CD44, which is overexpressed in many tumor cells, so it has emerged as a promisingmolecule for developing active targeted DDS.43,44 For example, a previous report described that encapsulatingchemotherapy drugs in an HA gel can increase their uptake by SKOV3 human ovarian cancercells.45 Therefore, an HA-based DDS can achieve a higher effect withthe exact dosage.
