FXR controls lipid metabolism by repression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP-1c) in liver (63), and in mouse models of streptozotocin induced diabetes and diet induced obesity, SREBP-1 was shown to be overabundant in the kidney where it promoted renal lipid accumulation and the expression of profibrotic factors which all contribute to kidney damage (64). This evidence concerns the gene NR1H4 and diabetes mellitus.
