A second focus for exploring the relevance of SLC26A6 mutations has been on kidney stone cohorts, or cohorts with a high risk of developing nephrolithiasis, because of the importance of Slc26a6 for intestinal secretion of oxalate in mice and the high affinity of oxalate for the human SLC26A6 protein. Here, SLC26A6 is linked to nephrolithiasis.
