CFHR1 and age-related macular degeneration: On the other hand, in conditions such as C3G, IgAN and AMD, which encompass various stages, one of which is the generation of a C3 opsonized surface, our proposal is that an excessive functional FHR-1/FH activity ratio, caused by gain-of-function FHR-1 mutants (like those duplicating the N-terminal dimerization domain) or elevated FHR-1 levels, will exacerbate the activation of complement at those opsonized surfaces in a pathological way.
