Platelets in patients with acute TB contain pro-inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), different from platelets in patients with chronic TB which contain adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), serotonin, and ionized calcium which is involved in the coagulation cascade [17].
