From the perspective of anxiety and depression treatment, the potential of diet-induced ketosis to inhibit NLRP3 activity in the brain is interesting because there is increasing evidence that stress-mediated activation of this inflammasome precipitates or exacerbates anxiety and depression symptoms, whereas its inhibition results in their amelioration or, in certain cases, termination (Iwata et al., 2016). Here, NLRP3 is linked to major depressive disorder.
