Disruption in endolysosomal pH can impair trafficking and autophagy, leading to the accumulation of macromolecules such as misfolded proteins, sugars, lipids, and also damaged organelles, a major hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease (PD) and mutations in TMEM175 appear to impact the development of PD (Wie et al. 2021). Here, TMEM175 is linked to neurodegenerative disease.
