Inflammatory cell types such as senescent fibroblasts, macrophages, and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were identified in GCA lesions, predominantly in areas of transmural inflammation.30 Comparison with control samples from polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) patients showed significantly higher SASP expression, with an increase in IL-6-positive senescent cells in GCA tissues. This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and temporal arteritis.
