Although there is no approved pharmacotherapy for the treatment of MASLD, several anti‐hyperglycaemic agents used to treat T2D (Glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1) receptor agonists, incretin receptor co‐agonists and sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 inhibitior (SGLT2i)) have been shown in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials to exert beneficial effects on MASLD and have cardioprotective effects, as reviewed in detail elsewhere (Mantovani et al., 2022; Targher et al., 2021). The gene discussed is GLP1R; the disease is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
